To commemorate my 400th Hydra Claw...
I give you this, since I get asked for it a LOT:
It's actually a variation of what I normally use, because I was out power-leveling a Guildie, so I had him heal me instead. When he left, I said what the hey, I'll try this build with healing signet. It was still good for 4 at a time, though I did get killed once by 3, hence only 459 health at the time. The benefit of this was that I had 1 energy regen AND a free skill slot (if I soloed with this I wouldn't need rez). So, it's a start, I might play with it some more.
That's Ivor's Staff, by the way. Kicks so much ass I can't sit down after using it.
Enjoy!

Judging from that post, i'd say an Insightful 20/20 Smithing Staff of Enchanting. 12 Points into smithing prayers, 13 Strenght, 7 Tactics. For the skills, Balthazar's Aura, Symbol of Wrath, Doylak Siget, Watch yourself, Healing signet, shield of judgment, Balthazar's spirit and one skill of your choice. Right outside Augury rock, the one closer to Henchmen.

OMG Digitalblast - I agree. I never knew you could do that. That's cool. This build seems pretty good, do you get any good drops? Because I know that Hydra's drop better than Griffons.

Grrr, yeah, I ended up buying them after slogging through 10 minutes of farming for my first crest.

I already see one tweak I could make to this setup (at work now, boo-hoo)-
Drop Strength to 12, increase Tactics to 9. Heal Signet would be >100 points instead of ~90. Watch Yourself would last 9 seconds vice 8. Dolyak would still be 18 seconds, but 34 armor instead of 36. However, req 9 Tactics shields are more common than req 7, so with this you could run either of the following 2 setups:
a) Malinon's Shield (if you've got the dough...) or equivalent -2 shield + Droknar's Smiting Rod
b) Malinon's (or equivalent) + Vamp Sword of Enchanting, maybe Vigorous Spirit for 8th skill, with whatever's left in Healing Prayers, to offset the sword's blood loss. Sword itself won't really do any damage (unless you get a low req collector's or quest reward one), but it'll steal health from the current target, and you can switch to a different weapon when you're not fighting. Come to think of it, there's a 10-14, +15% enchanted Longsword that has req 3 that you get from one of the Piken Square quests early on, that has the Crystalline skin. That would look cool, and still do ok damage. Not as high as the Rod's 11-22, but faster attack rate.
The net armor increase over my staff would be 9 (+16 shield, -2 Dolyak drop, -5 from staff), but I'd have a -2 to all damage plus 45 extra health. Don't suppose anyone has a Malinon's I can uh, borrow indefinitely?
My two -2 tactics shields are both req 7, so I could keep my stats the same, but more healing in place of 2 armor points still makes more sense.
As for Topaz crests, they drop pretty often for me. I just enjoy farming Hydras more than anything else out there. Sand Drakes usually will follow you much like Griffons, so you can round up groups of 6 or more with a little patience. They're much easier to kill, and I've gotten several nice shields from them. Couple good Defenders, both req 8 strength, one -2 in stance (for running), one -2 enchanted.
I'm gonna play with this some when I have time, and see how I can tweak it even more. Suggestions are welcome, as always. That 8th skill slot is just begging to be filled...

lol that build doesn't seem good to me, putting smite skills on a warrior, with balthazar spirit giving leaving you at 1 energy reg when warriors only have a base of 20 energy+10energy with a staff, 30 energy balthazar aura cost 25 energy alone, so it would take a long time to kill these guys.

10+2 axe
10 Tactics
10 Curses
Enfeebling Blood, Bonetti's Defense, Mark of Pain, Victory is Mine! {E}
30s. hex that does 30 AoE armor ignoring damage per hit, vs. your 10s. of AoE armor ignoring dmg with 30s. recycle time. [or was it 25? I forgot]
I suppose in some scenarios it won't work [where the enemy is using ONLY ranged skills and refuses to bunch up around you] BUT in the case of Balthasar's Aura, Mark of Pain beats it in efficiency hand over fist...
Can kill an army of 15 griphons in 24s. But that's only against lvl 22 griphons. What do I know about tanking melee only mobs?
